Information to consider on how to choose the best stun gun:
(TASER Guns and Projectile Shooting Style Stun Devices are discussed separately at the bottom of this page)
1. POWER:
The power of a stun gun is typically defined by two measures. The first is Voltage and is typically all that you will here about. Voltage is how much "push" is behind the shock that is being generated. The more "push" that there is, the faster and harder it can travel. More volts will push through thicker clothing. More volts will also deliver the shock quicker. So, voltage is important and, higher voltage is generally better.
But, amperage is the actual current or "shock" that the target will get hit with. The amperage is what enters the target's muscles and cause them to spasm, fatigue and give out. It is hard to find amperage amounts on most stun guns. Generally, 3 milliamps is about what the average stun gun delivers. And, trust that 3 milliamps is effective. But, if the only difference between units you are comparing is amperage, then choose the higher amperage unit.
2. STYLE:
Stun Guns come in many shapes and sizes and the different shapes are generally better for different applications. However, ultimately the best choice comes down to which unit you will most comfortably carry and use and keep up with. All too often, stories are told of people who buy stun guns, but don't carry them, because too much effort is required. So, give thought to how you will carry your stun gun and store it in such a way that you can get to it quickly should the need arise. Below are some common uses or applications of the various styles of stun guns:
- Traditional Stun Guns: Carry on belt with holster or clip. Good for walking to and from car/store and general stun gun protection.
- Mini Stun Guns: Carry in purse or pocket. Good for small hands or for someone who doesn't necessarily want to broadcast the fact that they have a stun gun.
- Stun Pens, Cell Phone Stun Guns: Carry in purse or pocket. Good for small hands and for someone who wants to disguise the fact that they have a stun gun.
- Stun Batons: Carry on belt, in hand while walking or on utility belt by security guards and other outdoor workers. Good for broadcasting the fact that they are carrying a stun gun. Good for defending against dog attacks or that of other animals.
- Stun Canes: Carry in hand while walking. Good for defending against attacking animals and keeping a possible attacker at a bit of a distance.
- Stun Gun Knuckles: Carry in hand while walking. Excellent choice for joggers, walkers and other exercise gurus.
3. FEATURES:
Many models of stun guns offer various features you may wish to consider. Here are the most common:
- Flashlight: Many models offer general purpose flashlights and some even offer ultra bright LED lights that can double as a weapon to cause temporary blindness and disorientation to the attacker.
- Rechargeable: Knowing that a stun gun doesn't require separate batteries is a huge plus. Being without protection because there are no batteries in the drawer is not a very effective way to protect yourself. Having a battery built in that can be recharged is much more effective.
- Personal Alarm: Several models are available that offer personal alarms that are built into the stun gun. So, in addition to having a stun gun for protection, the user can push a button to set off a loud siren, thus calling attention to the scenario. Alarms are available in loudness ranging from 110 decibels to 130 decibels. For reference, most quality car alarms use 120db sirens. So, 120db would be good. 130db would be much better.
-
Disable Pin: Some models offer this feature where, with the wrist strap properly around the wrist of the user, if an attacker forcibly removes the stun gun from the user's hand, a pin is removed from the stun gun which renders the stun gun non-functional. This way, the attacker cannot use the stun gun on the original user.
Know that having any stun gun is much better than not having any stun gun. So, choosing something rather than not ever making a decision can be the cause of something horrible happening. If we can help you in your selection process, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
TASER Gun Brand Products and the PHAZZER Dragon and PHAZZER Enforcer are both considered "electrode shooting" style stun devices or "projectile type". Essentially, these units have replaceable cartridges installed before being fired. Once fired, small barbs are "shot" towards an attacker. These barbs are tethered to the stun device by conductive wires and generally have a reach up to 15 feet. Upon penetrating the target, the stun device delivers pulses of electricity down the wires and into the target causing the stun effect.
While the voltages and amperages of these units are typically somewhat lower than that of a direct contact stun gun, the fact the barbs are continually in contact delivering the pulses of electricity over a longer time than a direct contact stun gun is usually applied, these units are considered equally effective as that of a direct contact stun gun. And, they can all be used as a direct contact stun gun after the barbs have been launched. So, if one attacker is hit with barbs, another attacker can be stunned with the probes mounted on the gun itself.
